Teijo Village is the heart of the region near Teijo National Park. There’s a beautiful historic church, one of the nicest in Southern Finland, and a lot to do.

Teijo Village, the largest of the three historic villages on the Teijonselkä seacoast, near Teijo National Park in Southern Finland, is a great day trip destination, when you are visiting the national park. Teijo has cafés, restaurants and pubs, accommodation possibilities and historically interesting sights. And the hiking distance to the national park is really short, making Teijo a unique visiting destination.

Teijo village has some 700 year-round residents, and during summers the number of residents rises, as a lot of summer cottages are located nearby, and the boat docks attract recreational boaters.

Teijo Village history

The iron industry in Teijo village dates back to 17th century, when iron-foundries were built here and in the nearby Kirjakkala village. The industries in the other two nearby seaside villages have long been gone, but there are still some small-scale factories working in Teijo.

Teijo, being the most central of the three villages, has always been the center of inhabitation in the area. A beautiful rococo mansion was built here by the local steel tycoon in the 18th century, and it stands renovated today. Adjacent to the mansion lies the Teijo Church, a beautiful stone-walled church, which was built in 1830. This historic church is apparently the smallest by size in the whole of Southern Finland, and definitely an interesting place to visit, when making a trip in Teijo.

Nature is always near in Teijo

Teijo Village lies on the seashore, West from Teijo National Park. From the village the distance to the national park entry is short, and you will immediately reach lake Sahajärvi when entering the national park. You can reach many national park hiking trails from Teijo, and the hike to Teijo Nature Center, Natura Viva’s depot in the national park, isn’t that long either. You’ll reach the Nature Center after a six kilometer hike.

You will also reach Mathildedal and Kirjakkala villages, the two other historic villages in the area, quickly. Just follow the seacoast North to reach Kirjakkala and South to reach Mathildedal.

A great nature trip tip: rent a Natura Viva Fatbike at Teijo Nature Center and make a bike excursion to all the three villages.
