Sahajärven kierros – the longest marked route in Teijo National Park

Lake Sahajärvi lies in the central part of Teijo National Park and stretches from near the seashore towards the park’s eastern border. In the middle of the lake is Kalasuntti island, and the trail is a loop route that circles the eastern part of the lake via the island. Part of the hike also follows the shore of Lake Hamarinjärvi, located north of Sahajärvi.

Trail terrain and the cable ferries to Kalasuntti island

The trail is walked mostly on forest paths and rocky terrain, with some elevation changes, and the route also passes through marshland in places. To reach Kalasuntti island, hikers use a cable ferry (vaijerilossi)—there are two ferries, one on the south side and one on the north side of the island. The ferry crossing is a fun part of the hike, but be prepared to use a bit of muscle power to move the ferry.

Where to start the Sahajärvi loop

The full loop is almost 9 km. A good starting point is the Laviankallio parking area, about 1 km of hiking from the northern cable ferry to Kalasuntti island. Another great option is Nenustannummi parking area on the eastern side of the national park—here you reach the trail immediately. Starting from Nenustannummi also places Kalasuntti island (and its rest stop area with a lean-to shelter and campfire facilities) roughly at the halfway point of your hike.

Sahajärven kierros is a popular and highly recommended nature hike in Teijo National Park.

Additional information

  • The Kalasuntti lean-to shelter and campfire site is considered the most beautiful and most popular campfire spot on the Sahajärvi loop. It is located on Kalasuntti island, which is reached from both directions via the cable ferries.

  • The full loop can only be completed when the cable ferries are in use. As a rule, the ferry is available from mid-May until October.
